Finding the right shapewear

Tummy control or thigh slimmers? Light, medium or firm hold? How to...

  • 5 min read

Good shapewear shouldn't feel like an event. It should smooth things out under your outfit and then let you get on with your day. The difference between a piece you reach for often and one that stays in the drawer usually comes down to three choices: the type, the level of compression and the size. Here's how to get each one right.

Start with what you're wearing

Before comparing styles, think about the outfit. Shapewear is a tool for a specific job, and the right piece depends on where you want a smoother line and what sits on top.

  • A fitted dress or bodycon silhouette: you'll want smoothing over the tummy and hips, and possibly the thighs.
  • A saree or lehenga: the focus is usually a smooth waist and tummy under the petticoat, with nothing bulky at the waistband.
  • Trousers or a pencil skirt: a high-waist brief that stays flat under a waistband is often enough.
  • A flowy dress or skirt: the goal may be comfort and preventing thigh chafing rather than shaping.

Tummy control vs thigh slimmers

Tummy control briefs

Tummy control shapewear focuses firmer fabric panels around the lower tummy and waist. High-waist shaper briefs are the most common version: they come up to or above the navel, smoothing the tummy without anything on the thighs. They're easy to wear under sarees, trousers and dresses, and simple to pull down for bathroom breaks.

Choose it if: your main focus is a flatter line at the waist and tummy.

Thigh slimmers

Thigh slimmers (sometimes called shaping shorts) extend down the thigh. They smooth the hips and thighs under close-fitting dresses and skirts, and many people also wear them simply to stop thighs rubbing together in hot weather. Some styles combine a high waist with the thigh coverage. See thigh slimmers.

Choose it if: you want a smooth line from waist to mid-thigh, or anti-chafing comfort under dresses.

Understanding compression levels

Brands describe firmness differently, but most shapewear falls into three broad levels:

  • Light: gentle smoothing that feels close to a snug pair of seamless panties. Best for everyday wear and long days.
  • Medium: noticeable smoothing that still lets you sit, eat and move comfortably. A good choice for work events and fitted outfits.
  • Firm: the most hold, generally better kept for a few hours at a time rather than all day.

If you're new to shapewear, start with light or medium. Firmer isn't automatically better. A comfortable piece you wear confidently will do more for your outfit than a very firm piece you can't wait to take off.

Sizing, especially between sizes

Shapewear sizing matters more than with regular underwear, because the fabric is designed to hold. Our shapewear is generally sized M to 3XL, depending on the style.

  1. Measure your natural waist (the narrowest part of your torso) and the fullest part of your hips.
  2. Compare both with the chart on the product page. If your waist and hips point to different sizes, go with the larger of the two.
  3. Between sizes? Size up. Going smaller doesn't add shaping. It adds pressure, which leads to rolling at the waistband, digging at the legs and an uncomfortable day.

Signs your shapewear is too small: the waistband rolls down when you sit, leg bands dig in and create bulges, or you feel restricted when breathing deeply. If any of those happen, try the next size. The shapewear size guide explains measuring step by step.

Wearing shapewear with sarees and dresses

Under a saree

A high-waist shaper brief works well under a saree petticoat because it smooths the tummy without adding bulk. Tie the petticoat over the top of the shapewear, not on the edge, so the drawstring doesn't create a ridge. Choose a style that stays flat at the waist, with a silicone grip or wide waistband if you'll be standing for long periods.

Under dresses

For fitted dresses, pick a nude close to your skin tone and a style whose leg line sits either well above or well below the hemline, so nothing shows when you walk or sit. For short dresses, a high-waist brief is usually safer than thigh-length shorts.

Comfort for all-day wear

  • Choose breathable, flexible fabrics and a light-to-medium hold for long days.
  • Check the gusset. A soft, breathable lining makes a big difference over many hours.
  • Do a sit test when trying on: sit down, bend and reach. If it rolls or pinches now, it will be worse by evening.
  • Take breaks. Shapewear isn't meant to be worn around the clock. If anything feels uncomfortable, take it off.
  • Wash gently, cool and in a mesh bag, and air dry so the fabric keeps its recovery. Follow the care label.

FAQ

Can I wear shapewear every day?

Light-compression styles in the right size can be worn regularly. Listen to your body: if a piece feels tight or restrictive, choose a lighter hold or a larger size.

Should I size down in shapewear for more shaping?

No. Sizing down usually causes rolling and digging. Choose your measured size, or the larger size if you're in between.

What shapewear is best under a saree?

A high-waist tummy control brief with a flat, wide waistband is a comfortable, reliable choice under a saree petticoat.
